Album Introduction

Lilly Eat Machine’s second full-length album,
is a studio album rooted in post-punk, emocore, screamo, and alternative rock.

At its core, the album is a story about the difficult act of moving forward.
If our first record, [우리는 불연소의 여름에 갇힌 채 밤을 맞고(Eternal Amnesia and Cursed Doomers)], traced a downward movement—a gradual fall from somewhere above toward the bottom—this album begins there and tries to climb back up.
Everyone lives with their own anxieties, fears, grief, and private struggles. In Lilly Eat Machine’s first album, the narrator responds to those feelings by turning inward, retreating into self-pity and depression until isolation becomes both a refuge and a prison. That is where the first story ends.

The second begins in the same place.
The album opens at what the narrator believes to be the lowest point of their life. Soon, however, they discover that there are depths below even that.
There are moments in life that no one can anticipate: tragedies that arrive without warning, in places where they should never have happened, to people who could never have imagined being caught inside them. They enter ordinary life with the force of a disaster and divide everything into a before and an after.
For the narrator of Lilly Eat Machine’s second album, one such moment takes place in Itaewon on October 29, 2022.

They survive.
And afterward, life continues.
Whether that continuation is a blessing or another kind of burden is something the narrator cannot easily decide.
Survival does not mean that life immediately becomes livable again. The smallest responsibilities required to remain part of the world can suddenly feel impossibly heavy: obtaining an official document, doing the laundry, answering messages, carrying out the ordinary routines that once required no thought at all.

Still, the narrator wants to move forward.
The latter part of the album follows that attempt—not as a story of recovery in any simple or triumphant sense, but as a series of hesitant movements toward whatever might come next.
There is no dramatic resolution. No moment in which everything is suddenly healed.
There is only the decision to take another step.

And that is where this story ends.

Although a specific experience lies at the center of the album,
we do not want [imnotokayourenotokayandthatsokay] to belong exclusively to one event, one place, or one tragedy.

Lives can be overturned without warning in countless ways.
Loss, disaster, illness, separation, violence, accident, and grief can enter a person’s life at any moment and leave behind a world that no longer resembles the one they knew.
There are circumstances we cannot control, and there are experiences no one can simply overcome through willpower alone.
What we can do, however, is remain beside one another.

Sometimes the help that allows someone to keep moving is remarkably small: an arm offered to help them stand, a shoulder to lean on, the presence of another person who refuses to leave them alone.
Those gestures may not repair what has been lost. But they can make the next step possible.

We made this album with the hope that everyone who encounters it can continue moving in their own direction, at their own pace.
Not necessarily toward recovery. Not necessarily toward closure.

Simply forward.
If these songs can become even a small part of that movement for someone,
then this album will have done everything we could have hoped for.

To everyone who finds their way to this page,
Hello. I’m Sean from Lilly Eat Machine.
What is love?
What does it mean to care for someone—to hold another person close in your heart? And what, then, is indifference? What does it mean to look away, to ignore? Are they truly opposites? These were the questions that stayed with me throughout the making of this album.
This record bears the name Lilly Eat Machine, but at its heart, it is a deeply personal story of mine. I wrote the lyrics and produced the music, while the other members remained quietly beside me, watching as these songs slowly took shape.
People often say, “I want to die.” Sometimes they do not mean that they truly wish to die. Perhaps it is simply the only way they know to describe a life that has become unbearably heavy. And sometimes, something has tightened around them so painfully that those words are all they can manage to say.
I was closer to the latter. I was exhausted. I was hurting. I was angry at everything that seemed to be happening to me. At times, I felt foolish simply for having ended up where I was. Why is this happening to me? Why is this person treating me this way? I asked myself those questions again and again. And again and again, I ran. I ran from one thing to another, stumbling along the way, collecting small bruises, falling down, getting back up, and running once more.
Then, one day, I followed a friend somewhere. And I nearly died.
If I had been pushed only a little harder, if I had been carried just a little farther, I might not be here now. That day, I saw people who were already gone.
I saw people die.
I remember emergency responders pouring into the scene while I stood there without fully understanding what was happening. I was pushed one way, then another, caught in the movement of people around me, until somehow I managed to get out.
I did not understand the full reality of what had happened until the next morning. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I did not know how I was supposed to react. I did not know what I was supposed to feel. So I did nothing. I simply let time move forward.
For three years, I lived without understanding what had happened to me. I did not know why I was struggling. I did not know why I was hurting.
And then, through another experience, I finally realized something: I had been living as if I had forgotten. But somewhere deep inside me, I had forgotten nothing. My mind may have pushed the memory away, but another part of me had held onto it with terrifying clarity.
And once I understood that, everything I had been unable to say for three years began to come out. Not carefully. Not one sentence at a time. It came all at once, like water breaking through a collapsed dam. This album is what remained after that flood.
There is something strange about coming close to death after spending so long saying, “I want to die.” What I discovered was that, when death became real, what I wanted most was for the people around me to live. I want my friends to live. I want my family to live. I want the person I love to live. I do not want any of them to disappear without warning.
That wish became the reason for this album. Perhaps none of these things ever truly end. Perhaps some memories never leave us completely, and some wounds never become stories with neat conclusions. Still, somehow, we have to keep moving. So when you listen to this album, I hope you will think of the people who care about you. I hope you will think of the people you care about, too. And I hope you will remember that the tragedies we see in the news, the disasters unfolding somewhere far away, the lives that seem distant from our own— they are not simply someone else’s story.
Thank you for listening.
Sean
